Oil: Chicago Punk Refined

Thick 86

Released on February 11, 2003

This item is not available for purchase. Sorry!

NOT JUST ANOTHER COMP...What you hold in your hands are 19 songs recorded in 15 days inside a make shift “guerilla style” recording studio in an old oil blending factory located on Chicagos’ South Side. The recording process, the bands involved, the eventual songs - are all perfect representations of Chicago’s rich tradition as a "no bones about it" working class town. Listen closely, there is no glitz, no polish, only grit and glory. Listen even closer and hear the sounds of the city; trains, planes, Highway 55, and the factory itself, continuously grinding and working mercilessly . The result is a big studio sound within a rugged factory setting. OIL is both a triumph and tribute to storied history of Chicago’s industry, politics, and punkrock. This is a snapshot of the Chicago underground. These songs can not be found anywhere else but here. This is history-Chicago style.

the First song "Rise Against, Gethsemenee" is the shit. before hearing "state of the union" I thought it was their hardest song. The tossers song is awesome too if you like the irish tinged punk. overall I give this c.d. a three because i did not get into every song, but the whole idea of the c.d. recording is pretty cool though.

This is the best compilation I have ever brought. Fucking storming tracks from Lawrence Arms, Alkaline Trio, and Rise Against. Aswell as a really good track from Tom Daily. What makes it even kooler is it was recorded in a factory in Chicago in 2 days!

First off I bought this CD because I am a big fan of chicago punk. Some of my favorite bands are from Chi-Town so I decided to give this one a shot. The Rise Against song is deffenitly one of their best, The Lawrence Arms are my favorite band, but this is not one of my favorite songs by them. The Alkaline Trio song is good but again not one of my favorites by them. As for the rest of the CD, there are some really bad bands on here. I won't mention names but seriously, some of these bands don't even belong in the same leauge as RA,TLA and Alkaline I don't get it. For the most part the rest of the CD sucks ass!! I'm dissapointed that some good bands that maybe arn't big and from Chi-Town didn't get on this. Instead I get the Owls (Awful)and two chick bands boo!! Anyway don't buy this unless you know what your getting into, buy it for the Rise Against song. That's really the only one worth while, you can probably get it online.

wow. a great comp. GREAT.the best of chicago right here. 5 AMAZING bands (alk3, haymarket riot, Rise Against, Lawrence Arms, and Local H) all on one platter, served right to you along with side dishes of other good bands that you might discover, because i know i have. buy it, its worth it. Defenetly worth it.

I bought the comp for the Alk3 and Lawrence Arms songs. I was hoping that the trio's song on here would forshadow thier newest release (good mourning). It didnt because the song on this comp is incredible and easily some their best work, but the new CD isnt very good. They have yet to top goddamnit, which is obvious to me now will never happen. The Lawrence Arms song is great and I cant wait to get thier new album. The rest isnt anything special. I rate this comp a five because the alk trio song on here is easily worth the money even though the rest isnt spectacular (with the expcetion of the lawrence arms).

this is probably my favorite compilation, but in the end it is just a compilation, it can only be so good. i dont understand why people dont like the lawrence arms song, the lyrics are amazing and the song rules. its my favorite here but my other favorites are the songs from Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Duvall, Dishes, Ghost, Tossers, and Robert Nanna. i was introduced to a couple new bands here, and i can pretty much listen to it all in one sitting because they really are all good. if you like some of these bands id suggest pick it up

great cd. personally, i couldnt tell that it was recorded in an empty warehouse, but it was great all the same. i wanted this just for the alk song, which was great (think new-alk), but lots of the other songs were great too. not really slow, but so chicago. other highlights for me were duvall and rise against.

Pretty good. Like most people I bought it for the Alkaline Trio song which was really tight. I probably listened to it like 20 times the day I got it which is more than I can say for that other new song (Jaked) that I only listened to once. The song is really good and most of the songs are listenable except for that dumb Tossers song, it was dumb. Yeah standouts for me would have to be Alkaline Trio, The Owls, and The Reputation. It was a fine sampler, worthy of praise. It is probably the second or third best sampler (its really a comp. but I like the word sampler better). Buy it for Old School Reasons I think the tri deserve a good pay check for that jam. Why is this so long? Oh yeah this gets a four becuase there are a couple throw away songs and that retarded Tossers song. Oh yeah its Mic from FOrt Wayne not Rexburg... arrrrggg!
