Minus The Bear

Highly Refined Pirates

Suicide Squeeze 21

Released on November 19, 2002

$13.75

MINUS THE BEAR has followed up last year's debut EP with a gem of a full-length album. After a year of building a loyal pack of fans in their hometown of Seattle, as well as winning the hearts of new faces while touring extensively in support of their EP This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic, the boys holed up in the studio this summer to record new music with Steve Fisk at the dials (BEAT HAPPENING, PELL MELL, LOW THREE MILE PILOT, etc.). They come out of that studio looking and sounding good, carrying the new shit, titled Highly Refined Pirates, under their arm. Highly Refined Priates delivers 14 new and fully realized songs, polished properly, skillfully arranged, and with enough hooks to keep everyone singing along and feeling fine throughout the winter and well into the new year.

I enjoy this CD and it is very melodic. I'm a fan of the slow melodic ska ish sound but not a huge fan. So it is a good CD but not amazing to me.

Warning...this is not an emo. this is just high-quality indie pop-rock like it's never been played before, featuring Dave from Botch playing some of the most inventive and creative guitar parts that rock music has seen. The sound of Minus The Bear is the soundtrack to falling in love on a beach with plenty of wine to go around. Relaxing, calm, and fresh are the words that would best describe this album, so be sure to pick this up as well as any other MTB disc. you won't be disappointed. -Ben

It's hard to say if this is as good as the new album.?.?.?.?Nah its not but it still rocks non-the-less. If you haven't heard Minus The Bear they are a great indie-rock band with i slight emo side to them. I highly suggest checking out their new cd first and if you like that then definitly pick this one up next.

yeah so this is a great cd, although i highly recommend beer commercials and meno el oso over this. Still very very good and buyable. I just didnt give it a 5 because the other ones are way better. Still, great cd, great music. The guitarist from botch is incredible, and the music is just amazing. Great musicmanship. Yeah, get the others first but great...just great.

Buy this CD. It's so different from a lot of the stuff out there right now. Even the "sad" songs put me in a great mood. The lyrics are catchy with perfect placement of the occasional curse word. The guitar is pretty technical without being too far out there to follow. Definitely an album for kicking back with friends.

Gorgeous and hypnotizing melodies! This is one of the best CDs I've ever bought. I'd recomend it to any open-minded music lover.

Seriously, one of the best CD's i've ever bought. It combines amazing technicality with amazing song writing. If you like Don Caballero or American Football (i know they are on two sides of the spectrum) you will love this cd. The former guitar player use to be in Botch, who i will always love, but Botch can not even touch these guys. The guitar players guitar lines are some of the best i have ever heard. just do yourself a favor and buy this.

this really isn't anything special, at best they are a poor imitation of the mighty dismemberment plan. this album is an easy listen but its no more than that, i guess as the D-plan have broken up this band will try to take their place.. i dont really recommend this album, i DO recommend the D-plan.

I just started getting into indie/emo cause I used to be all into punk and shit, but considering this is one of my first indie/emo albums, it's pretty fucking amazing. Though basically they all sing about girls it's got an amazing beat. I recomend this if you like softer rock.

Minus the Bear is simply amazing. They don't get anywhere near the credit they deserve. They write such clever lyrics and funny song titles. I suppose its best to describe them as tech indie rock/punk, but that doesn't seem to describe them well enough. However, they wont appeal to people looking for hardcore or fast punk. Those who like indie or emo will probably like this band, but Minus the Bear is really unlike any other emo band, or just about any other band, because of the tech that they put into their music. Check it out if you want to hear something new for a change.
