Philadelphia Sound

Chunksaah 15

Released on October 29, 2002

This compilation features the four best up-and-coming Philly hardcore bands. Their unique sounds pick up where KID DYNAMITE and LIFETIME left off-somewhere between the hardness of New York's SICK OF IT LL and the heartfelt urgency of Richmond's AVAIL. This is the new Philadelphia Sound! THE CURSE is a quartet with a steady hardcore beat, flailing guitars, and honest everyday lyrics. Their stage presence has thrilled audiences up and down the East Coast, supporting the likes of THE BOUNCING SOULS, SICK OF IT ALL, and THE DILLINGER FOUR. PAINT IT BLACK features former and current members of LIFETIME, KID DYNAMITE, and GOOD RIDDANCE. Fast and brutal rhythms, the likes of early 80's BAD BRAINS, et al; a hint of melody in the guitars like 7 SECONDS, and the lyrics are screaming and political. GO FOR THE THROAT has the classic blue-collar hardcore beats and breakdowns that you just can't escape when you're born and bred on the East Coast. They work hard in life, and their art reflects it. KNIVES OUT is the chaotic, heavy, and dark side of the family. A dissonant mix of early BLACK FLAG swirled together with the early 90's San Diego hardcore sound, reminiscent of Ebullition and Gravity Records. Their music may actually be even tougher than their name! Each band carries a unique sound, but their vibe and scene is all about the Philly family. They often play shows together, and share members with each other as well as other Philly acts. They support each other and local venues and artists. Philly truly is the city of brotherly love.

Good comp by all good philly hardcore/punk bands. I suggest picking this up if you've heard at least one of the bands on this comp. and you like them then you'll like it all.

PAINT IT BLACK own this split. If you were into CVA then this will be exactly what you want coz its 2 more pissed off, short as hell hardcore tunes. THE CURSE play gritty melodic hardcore and feature Dave Hause pre-The Loved Ones on guitar so you know its gonna be good. He plays guitar for Paint It Black too so the split gets even better. GO! FOR THE THROAT play hardcore a bit like early sick of it all but with the melodic bits like kid dynamite. Really good band, shame they split. KNIVES OUT are a bit different to the rest as they dont have that punk influence. They're dark and viscious with heartbroken lyrics, so its a nice variation, but not out of place. ALL IN ALL - YOU SHOULD GET THIS.

pretty good cd. fast straight-forward hardcore punk. the PIB songs are pretty good. i like the black flag reference in "hour and a half late..." the curse songs are really badass as well. if it's true that they broke up i'll be kinda pissed as should all the rest of you be. go!fotthethroat is decent. i'm afraid the only one i can't get with is knives out. sorry just not liking the scream-o emo. a must have.

great philly hardcore/punk comp. although only 1 of the bands on this album are still together (paint it black), it's still definetly worth getting. every song is great.

if you like any of the bands on this comp, then you should probably buy it. i had never heard g!ftt but they were pretty good. the other 3 bands are pretty good as well. if you're into bands like kid dynamite, and also kid dynamite, then you should get this. the only problem is it's like 12 minutes long. but that's ok, sometimes when im not far from home but want to listen to a full cd in the car, this is what i choose.

This cd is good but is only like 12 minutes long. The bands are all great but the songs are so short. (did I just repeat myself) well if you like hardcore then its worth the buy. If you don't then why are you reading this.
