Nerf Herder

American Cheese

Honest Don's 40

Released on August 13, 2002

The streets of Santa Barbara, California are a hard place to grow up, and an even harder place to start a band. Nerf Herder are one of the few that have been fortunate enough to escape the squalor and rise above the local scene. The years of hard work and devotion have payed off, and the twelve tracks on "American Cheese" chronicle the trials and tribulations of becoming a big cheese in a small pond...OK, if you've ever been to Santa Barbara you know that it's one of the mosst beautiful and affluent places in the US. If you've ever heard or seen Nerf Herder, you'll know that they're anything but "hard", and they don't come from the "streets". They are totally hilarious, and the tru masters of new way influenced quirky poppy punk music. On "American Cheese", Nerf Herder look deep into the human, alcohol, and masturbating. Twelve tracks you'll be able to relate to.

American Cheese is another fine entry from Nerf Herder - a must-have if you like the band. The strong guitar work and driving percussion are consistent with previous albums, and the humor is still there, too. "Welcome to My World" has just enough tasteless jokes to please, and doesn't go overboard (unlike their other release, "My E.P."). Among the best tracks are "Mr. Spock" and "Jenna Bush Army" - but they're all good. It's not as great an album as "Golf Shirt" (one of my all-time favorites), but it's darn good. I had a hard time getting into "How to Pick Up Girls," and this feels the same way - so I figure that it will follow "Girls" into heavy rotation at my house soon.

Although their newest album, American Cheese is not their best. How To Meet Girls is a better album and its the same price. This is a good one though. Don't read this review and think "That album sucks, its not worth the money." It is worth getting. Another band that has a great sense of humor like in Jenna Bush Army. Jacket is the best song on the album but all Nerf Herder is good. Like... American cheese! Yeah, thats it! If you like Nerf Herder get this. If you want to try it out for a first time, get How To Meet Girls instead.

I really love Nerf Herder's first album. I also like a fair amount of "nerd" rock or whatever. But this cd just didn't do it for me. I got "Welcome to My World" on that sqwak among us Floyd sampler and thought to myself: "Holy Shit! Nerf Herder has still got it!" Sadly, when this album arrived I found that one song to be the only track I really liked. So as far as recommendations go... If you really like Nerf Herder, well you probably already own this. If you have never heard Nerf Herder maybe this is a good album to start with, I don't know. I didn't really dig it, but I'll bet people that introduce themselves as Nerf Herder fans think this is the shit... so you should read one of their reviews. Man this is getting long... and it's not even interesting or funny. Personally, I never read any of these reviews that are over like three or four lines long. I wonder if anyone will actually read this? Especially by this point when I am no longer writing anything remotely helpful or even related to American Cheese. Definately, now, no one would be reading this, so I can open up a little... I am so lonely...

What happened? I couldn't wait to get this CD, after listening to "How to meet Girls," and their last EP. Unfortunately this is not nearly as good as either of those. It starts off strong with Welcome to my World, but its pretty much all downhill from there.... I suppose its not that bad, its just not even close to being as good as their last two full lengths.

I bought this cd for my friend who's a fan of nerf herder. They're a bit too poppy for me, but they're alright. Cashmere and jacket are pretty good songs.

You have to be into the corky punk to like this. For fans of early blink 182, hippos, pain, etc. Great pop-punk band though, i dont regret buying it for a second. very good album, itll tickle your pickle and tease your nipples. buy it!

Sense of humor, catchy riffs, and fun all-around. If you know Nerfherder, this album is like the rest. That's not a bad thing either. Too bad there's not really any stand-out classics, minus New Jersey Girl, which I can respect cause ya gotta represent the home-state - heh. Good release, not their best.

This CD kicks ass! If you've heard Nerf Herder, you know about their sense of humor. It's back on this CD, almost all of the songs will crack you up. Although It's not as good as their first two full-length CD's, it's definitely good quality music. Go. Buy.
