That Darn Punk

The Movie

(Ataris, Rancid, Lagwagon, Bigwig, Pennywise, Vandals, Swingin Utters, No Motive, AFI)

Released on June 4, 2002

This item is not available for purchase. Sorry!

Kung Fu Films is born and marks it's birth with the first full-length narrative feature film made specifically for the punk audience, That Darn Punk. The film stars, among others, members of The Vandals, with Joe Escalante playing a punk musician who pays the ultimate price for his back stage indiscretions. In and around the action on the screen, the film has been loaded with some of the best and most valuable punk rock ever recorded. Classic songs like Aliens (Pennywise), GGF (Rancid), and After You My Friend (Lagwagon) join amazing new songs recorded especially for the film like Siegfried and Roy (Nerf Herder), Only You (No Motiv), and Right on Q (The Vandals), which are available, nowhere else. Beyond this they added even more unreleased and exclusive new material from Kung Fu bands like The Ataris and Assorted Jelly Beans, and sneak peaks at upcoming Kung Fu bands like MI-6, Antifreeze and our unbelievable newest discovery, OZMA.

I have always been an advocate of punk's branching out into other mediums. Of course the music is the most important thing but it's always been good to see the culture produce its own literature and so forth.. The production of a movie by punks for punks goes on further to prove that punk is a lifestyle and not just a phase that white teenage males go through. I hope that Kung Fu's future ventures into the exciting new Punk Film genre garners more audience and support so that we may have a more diverse array of these movies from different young filmakers who have their own great ideas that would just be ignored by Hollywood.. Now off my soap box and onto the movie itself.. It's hillarious and stars Joe from the best band in the world, the Vandals. The rest of the gang is there.. playing the fictional band, the Big Tippers. The live performances by "The Big Tippers" and Guttermouth are awesome. There was no subplot which kinda sucked.. but that was about the only thing I didn't like about it. The funniest scene to my mind was when Dirk played by Escalante witnessed the filming of a cheesy cop show in which the L.A. punk scene was ridiculously portrayed by typical Hollywood types who had no idea what punk really was.. that's all I'll say.. just buy the damn thing.

I liked this movie, I don't know why. I mean Ozma - Domino Effect was played every five minutes and some really dumb stuff happens, but that is what makes this movie funny.

The soundtrack kicks ass. The Movie has it's moments. at least check one of them out.

This Movie is obviously the product of some heavy drug use. That's not a bad thing though. I though it was really funny, and had some bizarre ideas. The bonus concert footage was a cool idea, but the sound quality left a bit to be expected. Definetly buy if you like The Vandals.
