Weezer (Deluxe Edition Remastered w/Bonus CD)

Geffen 000213902.

Released on March 23, 2004

Ten years ago, a band with an unusual name debuted with an album that continues to influence modern rock. Now 1994’s self-titled Weezer (commonly referred to as “The Blue Album”) is presented in a two-CD Deluxe Edition.

Disc One of Weezer - Deluxe Edition presents the original album 96k/24-bit digitally remastered. Weezer, produced by Ric Ocasek (The Cars), peaked in the Pop Top 20, went triple platinum, and spun off the Modern Rock hits “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Buddy Holly” and “Say It Ain’t So.”

Disc Two is filled with associated international b-sides (including live acoustic tracks), rarities, demos and garage recordings as well as a movie track. Previously unreleased are the “kitchen tapes” for “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Paperface” and “Only In Dreams,” and pre-production recordings for “Lullaby For Wayne” and “I Swear It’s True.” In addition, Weezer - Deluxe Edition features the album artwork as the band originally intended and an expansive booklet with new liner notes and numerous photographs.

(I'm only talking about : Dusty Gems And Raw Nuggets [Bonus Disc])

on this cd you have all the bonus song that where on the single from the Blue album + Pre-recording and rare unreleased track. It's not bad but it's really for Hardcore fans of Weezer

One of the best albums of the nineties gets the royal treatment, and the results are amazing. Sure, you could probably spend a third of the money to get the regular edition of this album if you don't have it already, but you'd be missing out on the awesomeness included in here. First off, the package itself is great, a snazzy double digipak enclosed in a transparent slipcase, a 30 page booklet with tons of great old photos, handwritten lyrics and extensive liner notes. While that alone should be enough to convince you, you also get a remaster of the album itself. While there is some debate as to whether the difference is audible (Ric Ocasec's production was already huge and great-sounding), audiophiles will appreciate the extra punch of the new master (most noticeable on the kick and snare sounds).

A good amount of the second disc should be familiar to longtime Weezer fans as a good number of the tracks have been available for years, but they receive the remastering treatment too and the results are beyond great. If you're only a casual Weezer fan, though, this disc will be a real treat as it includes some of the band's best tracks (Jamie, Suzanne, etc.) as well as some sweet live recordings.

All in all, this release is quality all the way, centered around one of the most influential, meaningful yet accessible records in a generation. If you've never heard the blue album, you should. If you already own the blue album, you should own this.

Reviews on this site often fall victim to the "every album is amazing! 5 stars!" syndrome, but know that it is not lightly that I would grant such a rating, saving it for truly important or exceptional records. This is such a record.

The blue album is a great one indeed. There isn't even any reason to talk about that. It has been proven. But the extra cd is for sure worth the money. The acoustic songs are great and all of the unreleased tracks a nice as well. You get two versions of "Jamie". Come one, how could you go wrong?
