Dillinger Four

First Avenue Live

LSD 51

Released on August 19, 2003

This item is not available for purchase. Sorry!

O.k., so the Bad Brains were supposed to play at First Avenue on December 16th, 2001 in Minneapolis. But just like the last three times before, they cancelled. Two things made this time unlike the previous occasions: For one, H.R. himself took it upon himself to call the club before it had opened to bring the bad news. Secondly, Dillinger Four was playing the Entry that day, the small room adjacent to First Avenue.

Two things also made this unlike other Dillinger Four shows: having showed up accidentally on time, the boys had found themselves with an unusual amount of time to drink before the doors even opened. Secondly, a tape of the bizarre H.R. message had been passed to them to listen to, which they did while reportedly drinking and laughing for hours. By that time, word of the Bad Brains’ late-show cancellation had made its way around the room, putting half the crowd in a surly mood. Then D4 took the stage.

The next hour was a drunken wash, including an on-stage dissection of H.R.’s message, several on-stage phone calls to people ranging from Fat Mike of NOFX to Sib Hashian of ‘70’s rock gods Boston, as well as 14 of the guys “real songs” and, um.. two others (if you’ve ever seen D4 live, you know what we mean).

After many failed attempts by labels both local as well as international to release a Dillinger Four live record, LSD Records has taken matters into their own hands. Recently a phone call was made to the band for at least some sort of “OK”, bassist St. Patrick simply replied “Bootleg what you want...just don’t get us sued.” Fair enough.

I don't know what the people below me are talking about. This is an awesome live CD. Not only are D4 rocking their tunes, but there is so much hilarious stage banter going on as well. They keep trying to call people on their cell phones and play a recorded message from the singer of the Bad Brains explaining why they cancelled the show. I've noticed alot of people who write these reviews for live CD's always say the same thing= "Make sure you are a fan of the band before you buy this?"= what a bunch of crap! When I was a youngster first getting into punk rock I always got the live records first because they sounded more agressive and faster than the bands studio material! Just look at Ramones live records...there so much better than the studio albums! So everyone stop being a bunch of babbling babies and start trying some live records!

Every release that D4 has put out has been incredible...except this one. This is more of a novelty for D4 fans than anything else. It's a pretty accurate reproduction of their live performance, but the sound quality/mix of the CD isn't great--after all, it is a bootleg. It's not an accurate depiction of their live banter; they're usually much more hilarious. Let's hope another full length comes soon. D4 is the best punk rock band out there. For those of you unfamiliar with their work, check out any of their other releases first. Back in to this one once you know what you're getting into.

It's Dillinger Four, so its going to be the best no matter what. But for just starting to get into them I would reccomend getting all the other albums first. And then if you have some cash laying around get it, or if your a big fan of em.

yes, the songs are a little off? but what do you expect?! its a punk rock show! if you want the songs to sound note for note, then might as well play the record. so shitty or not its still better than other shit out there. but we do get a treat! they are fuckin funny and the message Hr left is hilarious. i recommend this record if you are an old fan of dillinger4. but if you are just getting into them, then try "midwestern songs.." or "versus god". halellujia..

ehh....i didn't like this cd too much. The music has bad quality and the lyrics are off. I would recommend Situationist Comedy or Midewestern Songs Of The Americas but dont buy this, definetly not worth the money.

I'm not quite sure if i like this CD. I love Dillinger 4 (who doesn't) but the CD just wasn't what I was looking for. The recording is horrible and most of the time it is hard to listen to the songs. Then it is really funny which makes up for it's recording flaws. Bottom line is only get this if your a really, really, really big fan of Dillinger Four mostly for the resason to say that you own it, not to listen to it.

Awesome live CD. Sounds more like a standup comedy act than a show at some points. D4 are probabally the best/most original band I've heard entertain the crowd between songs. What's the deal with HR, was he high or something when he left that message? OKMFDOA and Mosh for Jesus are the best songs.

This is funny shit. dillinger4 are my favourite band ever, ive never seen them live cuz they've never came to dublin i don't think, and never will either proberly. so this is the nearist i can get. i loved it they play fast and passionate. when they start calling people like fat mike and the drummer from boston on stage really shows the great humour on stage, and that thing with HR, Creepy and so funny. i recommend this to any d4 fan. GOD BLESS! SEE YOU LATER...

It's what you'd expect from a Dillinger Four show. Funny between-song banter, great energy, and the song selection is well balanced between This Shit is Genius, Midwestern Songs, and Vs God, as well as a couple others. However, I'd rather have heard the actual live show instead of this shitty recording of it. Get it if you're a diehard D4 fan.
