So Long, Astoria

Columbia 86184

Released on March 4, 2003

This item is not available for purchase. Sorry!

The Ataris are one of the most dominant bands in this sector of music, and "So Long Astoria" is their first full length album in two years! This time we are led more into the depths of Kris’s mind but shrewdly not alienated from the lyrics or meanings. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files including two untitled hidden tracks following "Eight Of Nine". The Ataris magic lives on unbelievably strongly and you’ll find yourself singing along to every song in a matter of minutes.

Ok. The Ataris. I don't know what to think about these guys. Well, as human beings, they are all really nice guys (especially Kris Rowe...a fellow Indiana man), but as a band, they are selling themselves short. "Blues Skies...Broken Hearts" had a few really well-written songs on it such as "1-16-96" or whatever and "Losing Streak", but it also had a few cheesy middle-school calibur songs, like "San Dimas" and "Your Boyfriend Sucks" (which I admit I am a sucker for). Then along came "End is Forever" which, in my opinion, was the high-point for the Ataris. There were more really well written songs like "Fast Times at Dropout High", "If You Really Want To Hear About It" and "Song 13", and the cheesy songs were still cheesy, but getting much, MUCH better (ie: "Bad Case of Broken Heart" and "Giving Up On Love"). It appeared that the Ataris were building themselves up to making an incredible pop-punk album. I was wrong. I bought "Astoria" the day it came out and what I heard was one giant step backwards. This album felt like "Blue Skies...Broken Hearts"...just with a cleaner production. Naturally, there are a few good songs on this disc, but they get lost amongst all the cheesyness. It is a shame that The Ataris are getting lumped in with feces like New Found Glory and Simple Plan, because these boys really are a cut above that Mall-Punk slop. Kris Rowe has the potential to be a really good song writer. He just needs to embrace it. Better luck next time.

Considering this cd has been sitting collecting dust for quite a few months now, that should pretty much give you a clear indication of how I feel about this cd.

If you like the songs from this album that have been played on the radio, sure, by all means, buy this cd. But if you like the old Ataris, specifically "...Anywhere But Here" and "Blue Skies, Broken Hearts...Next 12 Exits," you'll probably find yourself unsatisfied with this album. The edge they once had has been replaced with a more polished, traditional rock 'n' roll sound which might go over well with some, but I'm not impressed.

Somehow I keep forgetting how much I love The Ataris. I listened to this CD recently after having shelved it for a while, and it's simply amazing. This CD is solid pretty much from start to finish. There are some very catchy tunes as well as a few songs with lyrics and stories that are simply amazing (track 4 "My Reply"). I think the band sounds great on this album. My top 5 tracks are: (1)so long, astoria (2) Takeoffs and Landings (4) My Reply (7) Summer '79 & (11) Radio #2. I'll reserve 5 stars for simply unbelievable albums, so this one gets 4. Check this CD out, it's well worth it.

This cd is just average. There is nothing great about it. It seems as if the songs are made to be "radio friendly." If you are interested in listening to the same pop/punk songs that so many bands play this will satisfy you but this cd does not standout in any way. Its average at best!

It's a good cd. I really like the ataris and have most of their cds, but this one isn't the best by far. It's better than some that they have out but i think my favorite is End Is Forever, but it's still good stuff. The songs at the end, the "hidden" tracks, are the best.

good good cd. classic ataris with a little more experimentation. sounds radio friendly but still has the great kris roe lyrics that just hit you in that way. could have been crappy, but turned out really great. a lot of catchy stuff and classic ataris love songs. great effort.

Probably so long astoria is not the ataris' best album but i think they have done another great work. trying to chose my favourite songs i was very disoriented... all songs can be voted! if you buy this cd i think at least for a month your cd player will sound it.
