Alternative Tentacles 436

Released on March 20, 2012

New York City noise-rock gods Unsane return with a vengeance on their long-awaited seventh album. Recorded by the band and producer Andrew Schneider at Brooklyn’s Translator Audio (Shrinebuilder, Keelhaul, etc.), Wreck is an unfettered burst of pent-up emotions and frustrations channeled into song—an unflinching glance into a type of life others probably should not lead. From the shock and awe of lead track “Rat” and the stunningly damaged “Decay,” to the doom and gloom of the heavy-handed “No Chance” and the transcendental brainwork of “Stuck,” Wreck is darkly abrasive and poetic music delivered with a fearsome intensity. A punishing yet ultimately tuneful album, realistic in subject matter and as engaging as it is abrasive, the album showcases Unsane at their legendary best. Chris Spencer’s vocals and lyrics positively ache with fear and loathing (resembling the sound of a man trapped in the New York Subway system) while his searing Telecaster howl and pulverizing chords wreak havoc over Vincent Signorelli’s thundering drums and Dave Curran’s muscular, thick-as-lava bass lines. Unsane celebrates its 20th anniversary by delivering the darkest and most personal record of their celebrated career; Wreck is the band’s defining moment.

The greatest band in the world releases their first new album in 5 years, and surprise, fuking rules. Unsane has been around since 1988 and rather anomalous in the sense that they never sounded 80's at all - they were super pissed and hateful and dark and heavy and exciting back when other bands were drenching their hair in aquanet hairspray and writing love songs. And as the years passed they developed their sound better and better, an excellent mix of hardcore-punk,blues,and metal. Now after being a band for about 24 years, the members in their early 40's, i can say with complete honesty that they still play with the vitality of a band in their 20's, most bands these days sound whimpy and uninspired compared to Unsane. This particular record is a concept record in a way, about the horrors and the stresses of living ones life in a city, but it extends much further than that. One thing thats always made Unsane rule is the fact that they dont sugarcoat anything, people try to paint this world over with a layer of gloss to make it seem like its not that fukd-up, which anyone thats not a coward knows isnt true, and Unsane tell it like it is, that its a bunch of completely fukd-up stressful horrible horrifying mean-spirited bullshit. I am amazed after being Unsanes biggest fan for 17 years now and seeing them live 3 times that they put out yet another amazing album. Buy 4 copies of this and after listening to it,give the other 3 copies to random people on the street.

What a fucking great release. Loud, Groovy, Pissed. Fans of everything from stoner metal to technical hardcore should love this. A great release for Unsane. Let's hope that they continue to keep putting out music because this is something special.
