Burning Streets

Is It In Black And White

Sailor's Grave 16

Released on October 13, 2009

$9.50

Hoping to fan the flames of heartfelt rebel rock, Burning Streets emerge from the scene that has produced some of the world’s most timeless punk rock anthems - Boston, MA. Brothers Drew and Jewlz, bored teenagers growing up on the sounds of The Clash, joined longtime companions Chris and Steve to chase the dream of playing live rock ‘n’ roll. That boring life turned into a loud, exciting journey seen through the back of a high spirited yellow van, giving rise to a whole new chapter of things to look forward to. With a youthful attitude and a passion for the power of music, Burning Streets is simply four kids playing their own style of the songs that have touched their hearts, forever harboring that need for new experience in a sometimes not so intriguing world. The band hopes to hold their songs and energetic hearts close to them as they grow.

I recently came across 4 Kids from MA… Making Memories….

On October 13th, 2009, Burning Streets debut cd “Is it in Black or White?” hit shelves, and like the group, the LP has won over friends and fans nationwide. After listening to all of the tracks it was obvious that they have accomplished their goal of keeping their music and the punk scene alive. Every song is performed with eagerness and fervor.

Signing with Sailors Grave Records, brothers (Drew guitar/vocals) and Jewlz (bass), and lifelong friends Chris (drums) and Steve (lead guitar/vocals) prove to be some of the hardest working musicians on the road. While working on their album they managed to use social networks such as MySpace and friends to book all their own dates and promote their music all while touring the U.S. and Canada in their yellow tour van the “Stinkie Twinkie”.

Emerging from the same scene that has given us The Ducky Boys, Far From Finished and The Street Dogs, their catchy riffs and gang vocals only help to illustrate their Boston roots. The band’s songs cover every topic from politics, to being on the road, meeting new people, alcohol and a struggling friend. The track that hit home for me was the last track, “Throwing Rocks.” It details the battle of leaving the mundane life and journeying out into the world to follow your dream, and the fight to remain who you are.

Their songs are who they are-youthful, humble, witty and fun and show how they view the world, as four young punks enjoying the best years of their lives. They play fast, hard and from the heart, only proving their core punk values and Burning Streets dedication to the songs they play.

This is really a great effort. I spoke with Steve from FFF when they wer touring Europe and he told me that these guys are friends and that they would release a great debut. He was right. You feel the passion when you're listening to this. Not the most heavy Boston street punk, but very catchy, well written, with a lot of hooks. Definitely one of my favourite releases of the year. No passion, no glory!

I have known these guys for quite some time now, and this review is not biased. Is It In Black And White is one of the best punk rock albums to come out in years. These four guys put their all into this materpiece. Every song is written and performed with such passion and eagerness to succeed you would think they are veterans releasing their fifth album, not their debut. Watch out Boston, theres a new group of fellas coming for the punk rock crown!!
