Classics Of Love

Walking In Shadows EP

(Operation Ivy, Common Rider)

Asian Man 182

Released on June 23, 2009

This item is not available for purchase. Sorry!

The elusive Jesse Michaels returns with the intensity of yesteryear. His new band Classics of Love delivers a sonic punk rock sound that would fit comfortably in the DC hardcore scene of the '80s. Mix in The Who, The Clash, Bob Mould, Husker Du, The Hold Steady, Rites of Spring, Nation of Ulysses, Fugazi, The Wipers, Guided by Voices, The Kinks, and you have a plethora of influences that are hitting Jesse's writing these days. This is not some all-star lineup of famous bands. This is a real band, with a real practice space, that plays local shows and delivers an honest approach to the ideas of punk. This six song EP is the debut release of another soon to be classic punk band.

I'm going to review this without using the words Oper-... Comm-... the names of his other bands. In fact, I'm going to pretend they don't exist. To steal a phrase: It's who you are and what you do, not who you were or what you have been. Sounds cooler in the song but you get the point.

So this EP is incredible. It's original and invigorating and also a little short. It's like eating one of the greatest appetizers you've ever had but then there's no meal afterward. But what's wrong with that? I, for one, know that I do that shit all the time. Sometimes that's all you want.

Musically, it recalls some of the best bands found in years past on Dischord and SST, and the vocalist sounds like he's a fucking pro at this kind of thing. It's chunky and catchy and sounds like the kind of badass roots punk music you don't hear too much these days. I like the band name too, it's almost like it was a song title from another band or something...

It's always hard to listen to Jessie Michaels music and not compare it with Operation Ivy. It's totally unfair, but I can't help wishing more of the OP IV sound was present here.

This really sounds like a combination of Jessie's two post OP IV bands, Big Rig and Common Rider.

I noticed that I've become one of those people who are stuck listening to the same music that they grew up with, so I try to expose myself to whatever new music is available in order to break my musical rut. I hear myself saying that "Oh, that musician/band was much better back during those years." This reflects my opinion about this album.

I have read that this is an awesome live band. I am a big Jesse Michaels fan (loved Op Ivy, Big Rig & Common Rider) but honestly...I cannot get into this...Maybe it will grow on me, but so far...it's just not clicking. There were a limited amount of these made on clear vinyl too. So check and see if you can still find a copy! I will give the full length a chance, whenever it comes out.

Pretty good EP. It's really similar to the second Common Rider Cd. Same voice, same guitar tone, but the riffs are slighter harder. Jesse really lacks the intensity of Operation Ivy, but that was kind of expected. Also, the cd is pretty short, only clocking in at 13 minutes. I would still suggest it to all fans of Common Rider
