Against Me!

New Wave

Sire / London/Rhino 101304.2

Released on July 10, 2007

Indie heroes Against Me! make their major-label debut with the band’s fourth incendiary studio album, New Wave. Produced by Butch Vig (Nirvana’s Nevermind, The Smashing Pumpkins’ Gish and Siamese Dream, Garbage), New Wave raises the aggressive folk-punk, anarchist protest music of Against Me! up from the underground.

a great album. nuts to the haters. sure it's different from 're-inventing axl rose', but they've progressed in a good way and their songwriting is still as vicious and poignant as ever. every track is pure gold. buy this, and everything else by them.

I loved this CD, but then I'm a big Against Me! fan anyway. If you're into the rawer sounding stuff, you might be a bit thrown off by some of the softer, more experimental tracks like "Borne on the FM Waves of the Heart". The CD mostly sounds like a mix of raw punk, alt-country and 80's (i.e. "Stop!"). My favorite songs are on the first half of the CD, but overall it's a solid release. I love "Thrash Unreal". :)

For anyone who is still wondering whether Against Me! sold out with "New Wave," I'd like to confirm it: the band has sold out. Despite the fact that they continue to poke fun at this in their songs, (Stop!, Piss and Vinegar, Up The Cuts), the processed guitars, November Rain drums and major league production have definitely dulled their edge for mass consumption. And surprisingly, it's pretty good. These songs still have the emotion and intensity of AM!'s previous work and overall, the album is more consistent than SFAFC. The highlights are the catchy radio single, Thrash Unreal, the rousing White People for Peace and the cryptic, calypso-influenced Ocean. They also manage to pull off the duet with Tegan, one of the most interesting things the band has ever recorded. Welcome to the new Against Me!
