Ergs

Upstairs/Downstairs

Dirtnap 69

Released on May 15, 2007

This item is not available for purchase. Sorry!

The Ergs are ruining bands' dreams, and that could be the best thing for music in a long time. Lots of bands dream of becoming a great punk band, a great pop band, or a great hardcore band. But the truly great bands, the ones that come along and alter the course of music, can never be pigeonholed into just one genre. You don't want to listen to the same type of music all the time, so why would a band want to drone through songs that all sound the same? The Ergs have the talent to play outside the lines. The New Jersey-based trio draws influences from the strongest sections of the SST catalog, pop punk in the vein of both Ramones and Descendents, country, and even jazz. When listening to The Ergs, prepare to have your definition of pop punk challenged. As a band, everything goes; As listeners, everyone wins.

The Ergs! second and final album does not disappoint. Some may say it's not quite as good as dorkrockcorkrod, however I think it's just as good, if not better. The songs sound a bit more matured then the ones on drcr, yet still keeping all that minute long pop punk goodness that they are so known for. Unlike most pop punk bands, The Ergs! do not fall into the simple category of Ramonescore and never, ever get boring. The first four songs speed by you with orgasmic pleasure, the rest go down smooth and always keep things interesting. Jeff sings on Bike Shoppe and Girls of the Market Square, and the album drops off the speedy pop punk thing a couple of times to make room for a bit of country (Stinking of Whiskey Blues), a clean jazzy twee guitar (Books About Miles Davis), and finally Upstairs/Downstairs closes with the epic, self-titled 18-minute jam. All in all, this album serves up just as much awesomeness as any Ergs release and is very essential.

great record. flows effortlessly and shows that this band is not a one trick pony. experimenting with 80s punk and alt-country really worked.
