Originally intended as a one-off studio project,
put together by long time friends Joey Cape
(Lagwagon front-man), former Lagwagon drummer
Derrick Plourde, and Marko 72 (Sugarcult
guitarist), Bad Astronaut quickly grew into much
more. A musical consortium of seven members,
Bad Astronaut currently find themselves
preparing for their third release, Twelve Small
Steps, One Giant Disappointment. Three years
into the making of the album, the band was
dealt a crippling blow with the untimely death of
Derrick Plourde. Over the past year, they’ve
worked in their downtime between other bands
to complete this album, one of Derrick’s final
musical ventures. Twelve Small Steps, One
Giant Disappointment trades in a bit of the
experimental focus of the last full length for a
more straight forward rock approach. Fear not,
for Bad Astronaut continue to put their own
twist on indie rock with the use a wide array of
instruments, utilizing everything from from cello
to timbales, allowing them to achieve a sound
that’s truly their own.

This album is an instant classic. We all should buy five of them and save them for future generations to know it. This is the best of what modern indie pop-rock can offer. A seven pieces band playing a rock music with pop-punk background and unconscious symphonic layers. Musically, this is just as discretly genius as the first Weezer was, for example. This could sounds like simple pop-rock, but it is really more than this. This is a living album, something in which each note, each word is exactly where it should be. Nothing less, nothing more. A band at its perfection. And at its end, too. Rest In Peace, Astronaut. Your music will live forever. If any of you don't believe me, just listen to "Good morning night", "The "F" word", "San Francisco serenade" or "Best western", and tell me pop-rock has much better to offer. A band made by genius, for everyone.

If you're looking for a good Bad Astronaut album, try a little farther back with "Houston We Have A Drinking Problem." This album just seems to drag along uninspired.

This is nothing that will knock your socks off, but if you're a big fan of BA, then definitely get this. Great hooks and of course, it has Joey singing. Seems like the most mature album from BA and pretty polished. If you're just getting into the Astronaut, I'd say get the EP...it's the tops.

This is Saul, not Marilyn.
I don't really know why people on message boards all over the internet keep saying that this album was disappointing and that they were hoping it would be as good as Houston: We Have a Drinking Problem. In my opinion, this album is so much better than the other Bad Astronaut albums, I love all the Bad Astronaut albums and everything Joey Cape does, but this album is by far the best B.A. album in my opinion.
Also, this is a review of my experience, I can't promise you will have the same experience, but I got a very small poster for this album with it. The poster was about half the size of the posters that fatwreck.com sells for a dollar (well, sometimes fatwreck has sent me posters this size, but they usually send me posters that are twice as big as this poster.) Anyway, I'm focusing too much on the poster, I just thought it was a nice surprise since it didn't mention it anywhere on interpunk.
