Happy Hollow

Saddle Creek

Released on August 22, 2006

$12.00
Buy

Their most recent record, "The Ugly Organ", racked up considerable accolades: named one of 2003's best records by Blender, called "the best album of [the band's] career" by the NY Times, and given a 4-star rating by Rolling Stone. "Happy Hollow" is an expansion of their trademark discordant swell, marked by a new bounce, a buoyant strut, and a recognition that hey, this is fun. Dissonant yet distinctively melodic guitar sounds and front man Kasher's ever-cathartic yowl now mesh and clash with horns, piano, accordion, and other instruments. The themes addressed here include shattered American dreams, small town malaise, and religious hypocrisy. Never repeating themselves, always pushing forward artistically, and never settling, Cursive raise the bar with yet another groundbreaking record.

This cd isn't nearly as mindblowingly good as past Cursive releases. It is however very very good compared to tons fo other bands. I am drawn in by the concept album. Where as every song may not be that great by itself, as a whole and as a contributing factor to the overall story of this little town of Hollow, its amazing. Cursive is an amazing band and I'm sure they will recieve crap for ditching the cello and some of the intensity of Ugly Organ on this release. Thats sad because this cd is amazing in its own right and should get the credit it deserves.

cursive is a great band...really unique but i have to say their past releases are much better then happy hollow

some songs i can get into but the album as a whole i just cant get into it...its not something i can listen to straight and not skip a track...its more of a play a few songs and put something else in cd

I really like the change of subject matter in this album. This is truly a brillant cd. Opening The Hymnal/Babies is a great opening track. My favorite tracks are Big Bang, Bad Sects, The Sunks and Into the Fold. If you appreciate Cursive/Tim Kasher PERIOD, then definitely get this cd.

Eh. This cd is not really that "Cursive." Most of the songs sound more like "The Good Life." First two songs sound Cursive enough, then it gets boring and drowning which is anti-random and therefore anti-cursive. However, song #8, The Sunks, is easily Cursive's best song to date. After that it gets anti-random and un-cursive again. Definintely buy older Cursive. Buy The Good Life if you like this cd...not older Cursive.
