i lost my copy of this somewhere along the way but its a cd i definitely have no problem rebuying. a truly amazing album from an amazing band. while 'the shape of punk to come' is definitely better than this, this is still really good, aggressive punk rock/old school hardcore.

Refused at their best. Full of youth angst and aggression, yet mature and passionate this is the perfect release. Every track has something new to offer while keeping the bands deffinitive sound. An absolute essential to any collection

Songs to fan the flames of discontent is a more raw and heavy type of sound compaired to The shape of Punk to come. The band was still maturing, but the genius of Dennis Lyxzén is very iminant. It is hard enough to write such potent and powerful lyrics in your own language, but to do it in another language, is simply astounding. I felt that they were too confined to the Hardcore Genre on this album, that they played down to a level that thier fan base would find acceptable. But perhaps this is because I heard the Shape of Punk to come before this album, and I knew thier real potential.
In the Refused are Fucking Dead DVD, Dennis Lyxzén states that it wasnt until they completed Songs to fan the flames that they felt like a real band. This album was ovbiously a huge stepping stone for the entire band. The tracks on this album are not as well thoughtout as in the Shape of Punk to come, they seem to lack the creativity and uniqness that each song on The Shape emulates. But Songs to fan the flames still maintains the Refused's vison on music and politics. Could you imagine what Rock music could have been if Refused became a household name in 1998 instead of Creed.
Songs to fan the Flames of Discontent is indeed a very important album. Songs like Rather be Dead, Coup D'Etat, Beauty, and The Slayer are among my favorites. It remains to be one of my most valued records in my collection. However, The Shape of Punk to Come is at the top of my list, making this one seem somewhat less, but dont get me wrong, I still love this album.

This is a real good release. Its a re-issue from 1996. Rather be dead is a kick ass song. Of course, INC is better than Refused but while Refused was around, they rocked. INC sounds more talented and I highly recommend INC. This is a high octane hardcore cd so if you dig that kind of stuff, buy this now.

This is the most amazing Refused album I have ever heard, it completely blew me away! I dare say i prefer it (*gasp!*) to The Shape Of Punk To Come. It's harder, raw, very energetic and very technical, as well as being extremely passionate as always. What more can you ask of these Swedish innovators? If you have a soul, buy this cd.
