Boys Night Out

Trainwreck

Ferret Music 55

You can feel it from the opening notes of the first song; and it doesn’t matter if you’re intimately familiar with BOYS NIGHT OUT or you’ve never heard the Burlington, Ontario, group’s music before now. From the second the band’s sophomore album, Trainwreck, opens, with its cascading instrumental overture and its eerie voice-over of a physician diagnosing his patient, you can sense the arrival of something big, powerful—and where this band is concerned, previously unexplored.

The album started as a story the guitarist, Jeff Davis, had written—a typically dark yet surprisingly empathetic tale of love, murder, mental anguish and creative reawakening—then became the catalyst for the album they’d start writing. Now, that story has been broken down into 12 sections, which are Trainwreck’s 12 songs. The metallic, mathy, prog-rock dynamics of “Dreaming” set the album’s tone early on, their dark, descending guitar lines eerily complementing the physical and emotional collapse of the patient at the center of the album’s story. At the same time, longtime fans should feel right at home with songs like “Medicating,” which put the guitar harmonies, handclaps and sing-along choruses of classic BNO into a thrilling new context. Yes, Trainwreck is the album where these Boys officially grow up, the disc where their hopes, ambitions and darkest secrets collide to make the statement they’ve always had in them.

I like to give them credit because A) the whole concept record idea is extremely creative and ambitious of them and B) they are a good band live. But the problem Im faced with is that its my opinion that the songs on the album just arent that good. None of them (with the exception of the female led "relapsing", which is delightfully catchy and insightful) tend to stick with you the next day. Give them credit for trying and pulling it off, but not much more.

This is one of the deepest concept albums I have ever heard. Everything about this album is just amazing. Lyrics, instruments, vocals... My god. The best thing about this album would have to be the way everything compliments the story to perfection. I haven't heard an album this good for months. I was saving the 5, but this album can have it.

the more i listen to this album, the more i love it. powerful and well-written. it is unlike anything i've heard. and thats a good thing. its a breath of fresh air and is truly one of my favorite albums because if you dont know how the character feels from your own experience, then you'll find out soon enough.

This CD still hasn't grow on me, and I gave it a try. There are a couple of good tracks on this but nothing worth the 11.75$. Only good thing about this; new keyboard.

This CD took a while to grow on me. At first I didn't really dig it, but after a second and third listen I started to enjoy it. Check it out if you are into BNO, but don't expect another "Make Yourself Sick."

I'm a boys night out fan, but this cd sucked. i think they were just trying to hard. i liked their first two releases alot more than this. i only listened to this only like 1 time the whole way threw. dont get me wrong, this cd had a few good tracks, but it was just a big let down.

This Cd is overwhelmingly amazing. Boys Night Out has been my favorite band and still are. The lyrics just blow you away and you can listen to the tracks over and over. They still throw in the scream in 2 or 3 songs, so good thing they didn't lose that or I'd die inside. This is one cd you will have to buy, just like their last was. If you don't own this, then well you should. These guys really deserve your money, unlike tons of bands out there.
