Smalltown

Music

Deranged 62

Released on November 2, 2004

This item is not available for purchase. Sorry!

Finally, the first Smalltown full length ? ‘The Music’ continues where the ‘Years, Months’ 7" left off. More of the same great melodic mod influenced punk - ultra catchy, anthemic songs with raw tuneful vocals and teeth clenching riffs. Think the Strike and Stiff Little Fingers. Their last single was hailed as "one of the best disc of the decade" in MRR - I’m not going to argue - this band should be huge, this record might just do it... 12 brilliant tracks which are bound to grab a whole lot of attention.

A couple years ago I heard alot about this band in fanzines. So I decided one day I would get one of their CD's and check them out. They certainly know how to write good tunes, but nothing really unique here. This fits in the category "Maybe if I saw them live I would like them better?"

Scandinavia puts out some of the best music of the genre. Just like the review says, it's rancid/clash/mod type stuff. Which, in my opinion, you can't go wrong with that combo. Seriously some of the best punk rock out right now. Get this!

Smalltown is the best band of the 2000s, without a doubt (though there is not much competition). They combine a healthy dose of late 70s British/Irish punk (SLF is the easy comparison, mid 90s Swingin' Utters sounds, and heaps of their own creativity and song writing skills. This latter aspect really shows in their lyrics, which are thoughtful and fresh - not cliche in the slightest. In other words, this is how punk rock should sound! I recommend you pick up both this and their collection of seven inches, "The First Three Years". Both are incredible.

This band has been getting a lot of press lately and they deserve it. This is right up there with the best SLF stuff and Swingin' Utters. Its definitely inspired by SLF, The Clash, Cocksparrers, Undertones, etc but they put their own mark on the style. Its not a carbon copy of their heroes. Catchy songs with great hooks. Every song has heartfelt lyrics that are sung with true emotion. It only gets better after repeated listening. Stand out tracks are - Hooks, The Music, Smalltown, but they all are great. This band deserves to be huge. Do yourself a favor and buy both CD's.
