a great album by the clash,it seems to get overshadowed by london calling, believe me london calling is great but this album has different feel making it at some points better than london calling.overall a GREAT ALBUM.

What can be said about the clash that has not already been said? While more technically talented and lyrically sound than their early british punk counterparts the buzzcocks and the sex pistols, they were said to have lacked the ferociousness of bands of that era. Therefore they are pushed out of the minds of many punks today. And though songs like "Rock The Casbah" and "Train In Vain" are blatant pop songs and not very good ones at that the clash were essentially just doing what they wanted to, when they wanted to. One must consider that with a bulging back account and the increasing age of a band, production is going to get better and more polished. That results often in more radio friendly, softer music. It has happened over the years with many bands, most notably the red hot chilli peppers and the ramones. It isn’t far fetched to say the sex pistols sound would have hanged immensely had they lasted into the 90s. The point is, The Clash should not be hated for falling victim to a certain inevitability in the music industry, but rather loved for what they did do right.

One thing they did right is this album. It is heavy on harmonized vocals and Strummer's voice in cleaner a bit cleaner which may or may not be a good thing depending on you preference. The lyrics here focus mainly on working class politics, as well as guns, drugs and even punks (sort of). the first track' Safe European Home" is a chorus-less sing along which was obviously aimed to be a radio single. The vocals are well timed and the drums are spotless. "English Civil War" is a pseudo punk mockery of the childrens classic" The Ants Go Marching One By One". I STILL find it hard to get used to that one. Perhaps the most outstanding track on the album is "tommy Gun" which further proves fast catchy punk doesnt need to be" verse bridge chorus" to be great. Other great songs include"Drug Stabbing Time", " Last Gang In Town" and "Guns On the Roof". The biggest disappointments are probably "Stay Free" and 'All The Young Punks" both of which not only drag on but dont go anywhere as well. I Can recommend this CD but i cant call it perfect.

Speechless, this album is my favorite of all of the clash, alot of people don't like it as much as london calling or the s/t, but just for "All the Young Punks" this is a great album.

9/23/2003 by Dylan from Gold Bar, WA Rating:
this cd is very good, on the same level as the s/t if not better. musically they are better on this one. a definite must have for any punk fan.

8/16/2003 by Mike from Delran, NJ Rating:
This is a pretty good clash cd. its not as good as london calling or there self titled but its still awesome. some good songs on it are tommy gun, julies been working for the drug squad, safe european home. its a pretty damn good cd. definently worth buying.

1/25/2003 by Timothy from Lancaster, CA Rating:
This is a VERY good cd. The Clash is the best band I've EVER heard. It's very much like the s/t but a little touch of their newer stuff, very good 70s british punk. Though I reccomend getting London Calling and the s/t first.

1/12/2003 by Alex from Jenkintown, PA Rating:
this cd was ok but ive heard better from the clash. sounds like they didnt put as much effort into this cd as they did the others but its still pretty good. if u really like the clash a lot u might as well get this just so u can say u have every record they made.

5/27/2001 by Peter from Meriden, CT Rating:
this is good. not as great as the first clash, but it is good. get this one too. none of these songs are bad, they are just missing something that the first clash cd has. buy this.
