J Church/Sound On Sound - Split
J Church/Sound On Sound

Another split for the almighty J Church! This time versus a Chicago band that we like a lot called Sound On Sound. SOS sorta sound like a great old Lookout Records band that has been lost to time called Monsula, but also have a pronounced influence from a lot of post-1985 DC bands. Once again both bands will present one new song and one cover song. J Church brings a demo version of a song from their new LP and a Misfits cover, and Sound On Sound delivers one original and a Billy Joe Shaver song.

I read about this EP the morning after Lance Hahn's death. I had already decided I wanted it before I got home and saw the devastating news in an Austin based newspaper (online version). I was telling my wife before we arrived home that it would be great to see Lance Hahn belt out Where Eagles Dare. I wont be able to see it, but at least I can hear it. J Church does a better more raw version here than you will find on the Misfits Vol.2 collection. The first song I need to give some more time to. I like the lyrics, but musically J Church always took a 2nd place to Cringer in my mind. But then again with J Church you have so many choices of albums that sometimes that opinion flips. I didnt care for Sound On Sounds. If I was Don Martin of MAD fame I could emulate the sound they make, but its not one I really care for. Although they also do a cover song, and its not too bad. The difference makes me wonder what this band real sound is supposed to be. But there just isnt enough to inspire me to find out.
