Hot Cross - Cryonics
Hot Cross

Cryonics

Level Plane 50

Released on May 20, 2003

Sorry, but this item is no longer available

HOT CROSS delivers and emotional and ferocious piece of hardcore in the shape of Cryonics, the band's first full-length LP. Nearly a year in the making, Cryonics is a collection of dialectics; desperate, yet controlled. Structured, yet chaotic. Imagine frantic rhythms and intricate time changes coupled with doom-laden NEUROSIS-esque riffage. HOT CROSS has taken their sound to another level and has created a unified and mature work that will defy expectations and leave hearts pounding to a rhythm that suggests both defiance and solidarity. The band has played extensively in the US, Europe and Japan. They have released an EP as well as a split EP with their labelmates from Virginia, LIGHT THE FUSE AND RUN; both to widespread acclaim frrom within and outside the hardcore punk scene.

I bought this album without having heard a single song before, I just had a good feeling about it. I´ve heard some Saetia-songs before though, and I trusted all the good criticism here on interpunk and on music-sites like sputnikmusic.com which by the way is a great site. After listening to it countless times through, I have to say it has given me a reincarnation in my music-weekday.

This is truly a masterpiece.

Every instrument plays its own unique things, and it blends together perfectly. Just like its a symbiosis between the musicians. It has great dynamics ranging from beautiful clean-parts to tight, powerful parts. The guitar riffs are complex and original, very typical Hot Cross I´d say. And its got many nice clean parts with screaming upon it as a contrast. The drumming has a lot of diversity. The vocals are raw and unique, and with a lot of angst and energy, and he screams out short powerful phrases in moments you don´t expect. I can understand people disliking the unpolished, unmelodic "in-your-face"-sound though. I usually don´t think so much about the bass when listening to music. It just is there, necesserily enough. But on this album its so much more. It´s not just plodding along with the music, just to make it bold. It´s got independent lines that ranges with deep feeling and powerful rhytm.

The best aspect of this cd in my opinion is the "asymmetry" in the music, or the surprise-moments if you can call it that. The rhytm is often fractured, but in a good way. And the new tacts starts again when you don´t expect it. Along with untypical build-ups, it makes the music interesting.

The only bad things I have to say about this album is that the production-quality isn´t the best, but i´ll say that this makes the heart and soul of the album. And not all of the tracks are classics, but you´re gonna search a long time to find an album who can brag about that.

All in all I beg on my knees and pray for many others to buy this album and then have a reincarnation in their music-weekday for themselves.

3/20/2006 by Lisa from Chico, CA Rating:
This album is rediculous. The guitar work is not only amazing, but they also have the singer from Saetia. There is a great range of tempo to the cd which keeps it interesting. Anything anyone else has said about this cd is correct. Amazing band, one of the best albums I have ever owned.

5/27/2005 by Paul from Frederick, MD Rating:
yeah this album is really really good. they have a truly unique sound. the singing is phenomenal especially how they bring three voices together. the guitar also makes this band very unique and without it the record would definitely not be as good. i think "pretty picture of a broken face" is one of the greatest songs ever and my favorite off the album is "figure eight." oh yeah, they are much better than saetia although you can still hear a bit of them in some of the songs. you should buy this.

12/29/2004 by Lisa from Stow, OH Rating:
Wow. This album is phenomenal. Hot Cross is one of the two bands started by ex members of Saetia - the other being the equally amazing Off Minor. This is Hot Cross' first full length release, and it far surpassed my expectations. Lots of jangly guitars and off beat drumming mixed with superb lyrics.

I had the distinct honour of seeing Hot Cross in Toronto last July with about 15 other people, and that remains one of the most amazing concert experiences I've ever had. This band is just as phenomenal on cd as they are live, so if they come anywhere near your area, I strongly advise you go to the show.

Even after owning this cd for over a year, it remains on my most-played list, and for good reason. Cryonics is a fantastic cd - an all-around hands-down amazing release. Pick it up, and prepare yourself for one hell of a tour-de-force.

awesome screamo, in the truest sense of the word. they have members from saetia, so of course they are at the top of their game. buy this and saetia, and will know what screamo means.

4/6/2004 by Matthew from Swansea, United Kingdom Rating:
A very impressive hardcore album. Well thought out and complex song structures blended with screaming vocals and a few intimidating time signatures. The guitar work is well above average with a couple of different effects and styles used. The bass and drums also work geniusly together. There are one or two songs that aren't as good as the others and the lyrics to me make no sense, but all in all I would highly reccomend this album!
