| Fiction Reform - Take Your Truth |
The sophomore effort from Orange County’s favorites Fiction Reform titled “Take Your Truth”, features 12 tracks showcasing their ever-maturing style. The band focused on creating their most dynamic and heartfelt songs to date. Songs like “Shellac and Vinyl” and “Hi-Fi Violence” focus on their
punk/rock core, while “Jimmy” and “Smoke and Whiskey” show their creative songwriting abilities. Brenna Red’s raspy vocal style that drew in many of their fans remains the same while the rest of the band tightened up their performances and focused on creating a solid foundation of rock. Overall, fans of the bands first release won’t be disappointed and the radio-friendly hits on “Take Your Truth” are sure to win over many more.

| Upon first listen, I was disappointed. Everything was technically "better" than their first album, but it lacked the scrappy immediacy of their debut, and so I filed it away in the to-be-traded-in pile. For some reason I decided to give it one more spin before I traded it off, and I'm glad that I did. I guess I just needed some time to appreciate it. This is definitely in the rock and roll vein, as opposed to straight up punk rock (though admittedly the track, Who's To Blame, is a flailing rocker.) It's an uneven release but when the band decides to drop the hammer, they bring it down hard. I suppose comparisons to The Distillers and Civet are inevitable, but Fiction Reform are their own band and they do what they do very fucking well. |
