Queers

Don't Back Down (2017 Reissue with 3 Bonus Tracks)

Rad Girlfriend 71.2

Released on July 7, 2017

$13.50

Rad Girlfriend Records is proud to reissue "Don't Back Down" on CD, the seminal fifth album by pop punk band The Queers, originally released on Lookout! Records in 1996. It was remastered by Mass Giorgini and includes 3 songs from the Bubblegum Dreams EP, along with the original liner notes and lyrics. On "Don't Back Down", The Queers explore whole new areas of pop harmonies that were only hinted at on previous records. There's even a 60s style Farfisa organ on "Janelle, Janelle" and "Punk Rock Girls". They definitely haven't said goodbye to their own style of bare bones, in your face punk rock, as evidenced by such cute little ditties as "I'm Okay, You're Fucked" and "Brush Your Teeth" but the reason this album truly stands out is because throughout their career, The Queers have been able to maintain their sense of humor without being corny and have been able to combine that with unforgettable melodies and harmonies showcased on songs like "No Tit", "Born to do Dishes" and "I Only Drink Bud". Joe Queer has written some of the best pop punk songs in the world and this record highlights The Queers ability to do just that. Kembrew McLeod of Allmusic regarded the album as an artistic peak, stating that "the Queers successfully use the musical vocabularies developed by the Ramones (as well as Brian Wilson and others) and take their songs to new levels" and "some of the songs, dare it be said, even surpass many of Brian Wilson's perfect pop songs." Don't back down features cover songs from the The Beach Boys, The Hondells, The Catalogues and The Muffs. "Don't Back Down" features 14 songs that range from butt-slamming classic punk rock to exquisite and beautifully crafted pop. A fan favorite and quite possibly their best work, anyone who gets to see The Queers perform songs from "Don't Back Down" are in for a real treat.

This is Tyler and Emily. This is classic Queers, plain and simple. Theres no point of rambling about this too long, because every review is most likely the same. This is perfect mix of Ramones and the Beach boys. Number One is one of the best love songs ever written, along with Today I fell in Love off of Punk rock confidential. Great to start with if your not familiar with the Queers. Buy now!

This record is the "Good Vibrations/Rocket to Russia" of the 1990s. If you don't own this and "Love Songs for the Retarded", you obviously know nothing about rock music.

What many consider the Queers brightest moment. However, I will always treasure "Love Songs For The Retarded" over any Queers record. "Don't Back Down" is awesome, every song on the album is a winner. Some would say this is the Queers "London Calling" or ... "Newhampshire Calling"??? This CD will always hold great memories for me. "I Only Drink Bud" use to be my best friend's pager recording (many years ago). Get it now! It's a darn punk rock classic for goodness sakes!

A really good cd, but i suggest getting their live cd instead, it has a lot of the same songs and the quality of the live cd is actually pretty good. If you are a big queers fan buy because it is still amazing but if you want to save money get the live cd.

Most Queers fans will tell you this is their best release, and they're right. Everything they achieved pretty much culminated on this album. The part Ramones, part Beach Boys, part Black Flag punk rock style they created is epitomized here. It's full of gloriously sweet pop-punk gems like Punk Rock Girls, Born to do Dishes, Number One, and Janelle Janelle. But the band mixes it up too, with some faster and rawer tracks like I'm Okay You're Fucked, just to keep the variety going. Killer surprises abound, like the gorgeous guest vocals on the last track. If you want to get one Queers album, this is the one it should be. They've never been able to do anything close again. Not only that, but this record is just plain punk rock history. You owe it to yourself to own this.

"Dont Back Down" contains exactly the type of songs I want to hear when I buy a Queers record. Songs like "No Tit", "Number One", "I Only Drink Bud", and "Another Girl" grabbed me on the first listen as well as so many others. You know you cant be disapointed when the Queers are covering a Beach Boys song, "Dont Back Down" which they do so nicely. Bottom line, if your into The Queers, this is a must have.
