“One of the most anticipated albums of 2005” (Alternative Press) Shattering preconceptions of punk and metal, Avenged Sevenfold (aka A7X) blazes a bold new path with its debut major label album, City Of Evil. Fusing punk with melody, metal intensity with an adventurous spirit, the drama and darkness of AX7 moves effortlessly from his powerful vocal punch to thick cascading melodies, from loud and fast to epic. Influenced by everyone from Pantera, Metallica and Iron Maiden to Bad Religion, Misfits, Guns ’N Roses, prog-metal and experimental rock, Avenged Sevenfold seeks its own musical vengeance with City Of Evil.

This is one of those bands I really like, but whose vocalist should change his attitude. After reading a couple of interviews to Shadows, all I can say is "WTF?" I don't know if he means what he says, of he's just sarcastic, but anyway, this review is not about him, so blah.

The CD is right, very different to the other A7X releases; to be honest, City of Evil and Waken the Fallen look like 2 CDs released by 2 different bands. But they're not, and the truth is the guitar work here is amazing. The vocals should definitely change a bit; he can do better than the scream at the beginning of Bat Country. Oh yes he can.

My favorite songs are "M.I.A.", "The Wicked End" and "Trashed and Scattered".

ok, so i dont agree with the cockyness of the band but i have to admit...i fucking love there music. this cd isnt as good as the fallen, but its pretty damn close. its a must buy for any fan. ps they fucking rule live...u will be blow away

11/21/2005 by Helge Andre from Sykkylven, Norway Rating:
Oh yes!!!It's grrrreat!Unfortunately he cant scream anymore (throat-surgery I read somewhere...), so they have gone more happy-metal than dark goth-metal.But still great!I had to have a few listens to it, and now I love it!Every song is great with their fantastic handling of instruments and voice.

10/10/2005 by Bryan from Manahawkin, NJ Rating:
Before my review..i just wanna say im sick of all these kids saying "a7x sucks now..theres no more screaming..they're sell outs" If u were a real fan of the music u would learn to accept and appreciate the change. Its not M. Shadows fall he blew out his voice..actually it is but the outcome was beyond his control....so..City of Evil is packed with insane drumming and technical guitars which are alot more difficult then waking the fallen. While this is not A7X's best album..they manage to make the clean vocals work with the music and deliver a very guns and roses like album..full with orchestra and epic interludes. There are some catchy songs on here, such as the current single "Bat Country" and "Burn It Down" which is my favorite. Now dont base your purchase off of one man's opinion..pick it up and listen to it a few times..while its not as good as waking the fallen/sounding the seventh trumpet..it will grow on you and you will appreciate it just as much.

Clearly one of their best albums yet. Though i do like 'Waking the Fallen' the most out of the three, i still like this album just as much. Doing away with the screaming was a nice touch, seeing as Shadows has a great voice, though i do miss the occasional mixing of screaming and clean vocals that they did on 'Waking the Fallen' but hey what can ya do? The aspect i like most about this cd is the guitar solos. Especially in 'Bat Country', 'Strength of The World', and 'M.I.A'. Synyster and Zacky together are truly one of the most dynamic guitar duos i've ever heard. Listening to the drumming on this cd seems less powerful then their previous albums but it's still just as good, especially in 'Sidewinder' and 'Blinded in Chains'. Listening to 'Sounding The Seventh Trumpet' all the way to 'City of Evil', it's obvious these guys have finally found their sound, and let me tell you, it's definitely working for them. At least in my opinion. Say all you want about this band sucking because they dont scream, so what? They surely haven't lost their edge, they've just found their real musical talent and what they feel they can do best. Nonetheless this is a GREAT cd and i recommend it for every DIEHARD A7X fan. However if you like the pure screaming style i'd go with 'Sounding the Seventh Trumpet', but if you like clean vocals and guitar solos that'll blow your mind away i'd definitely go with this cd. 5 stars easily.

This cd is alright. I prefer their older stuff better, but once you listen to this cd it gets better

7/13/2005 by Travis from Yucca Valley, CA Rating:
This cd will blow your mind. It's freaking sweet but it wasn't what I really expected from Avenged. If you only like Avenged for their screaming then you shouldn't get it because your gay, but if you are a hardcore Avenged fan then get this cd because it will own your face off.

M. Shadows can't scream anymore but Synyster Gates and The Rev. are still as crazy as ever.

7/8/2005 by Paul from Wellington, New Zealand Rating:
I've heard people dismiss this album strait off the mark, but the truth is it is a very well put together album. The songs flow really well into one another and Avenged Sevenfold once again have proven themselves.

Great CD!!

7/2/2005 by April from Ripon, WI Rating:
The new A7X cd is not to be compared to waking the fallen or the 7th trumpet. I'd say they've changed their format with every album but it's still awesome. The last album Shadow's did there was alot more screaming this album was more centered around the hypnotic guitar rifts. I do think there was less screaming though due to M Shadow's battle with his vocal problems. I still absolutely loved it. Thrashed and Scattered is my favorite song for the moment, other than that i think this cd is alright. I would compare waking the fallen better to City of Evil but none the less it's still A7X and i worship them reguardless. Overall, great album, great sound still a kick ass band. It rocks.
