Buying this album sorta seemed mandatory for me since Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers were the first band I ever got into. So a all punk tribute to them should be pretty good right? And it is. It isn't just like all heavy and fast either. Though the version of Free Fallin' is faster (and oh so very good).
I found this album here by plugging in the Promise of Redemption. It is Shane's acoustic side project of Valencia. Anyways they do a good cover of "You Don't Know How it Feels." I never heard of any of these other bands, but they all played fitting remakes/reimaginations of Tom Petty classics.
Anadivine played a rousing version of "Runnin' Down a Dream." Search/Rescue did a more modern sound of "You Got Lucky." I like that a lot. I already mentioned Madelyn's "Free Fallin'" I love that one. Limback did a fun version of "Apartment Song." Sleepaway version of "I Won't Back Down" was a little odd as it sounded like a lounge room song with talking in the background, but it was a neat version nontheless.
AlterEgo did the obligatory "American Girl" cover. It's good, it has a horn section in it which is pretty sweet. Echo Screen did a little noisier variation version of "Mary Jane's Last Dance", but you can obviously recognize the song it's good. Foreverinmotion ends with the laid back "Face in the Crowd."
There are songs I would trade for others (I woulda like to hear some Southern Accents songs covered or Let Me Up - I've Had Enough. Their two under appreciated albums). But that's just coming from a die hard Tom Petty fan. The only real problem with the cd is that it is a little pricey, but if you already are a Tom Petty fan you'll like it. They do his work proud.
